This will focus primarily on office and graphics programs, and show some web related tools as well. See first hand how compatible LibreOffice is with Microsoft Office, and how to work seamlessly across your LAN in both Windows and Linux.

Monthly meetings take place at ITT Tech at 6:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month.

There might also be a group of ITT students there, so this could be a great opportunity to come out to either evangelize and show people your enthusiasm for the Linux world, or to find out just how fun Linux can be.

A Mr. Bruce Bourchard is looking at the possibility of starting a new LUG in the Hanover area, and will hopefully (if he can make it to the meeting) be guiding our discussion at the beginning.

I’m still waiting to hear from ITT Tech if we will have internet access this time around for the meeting. There have been some technicalities with their policies that I’m trying to work through. I’m sure we can get this resolved one way or another, but just be aware of the possibility.

ITT Tech Harrisburg Campus, – Tuesday, February 21st at 6:30pm

An introduction to software Equivalents in Linux. See the alternatives to programs like Photoshop and Microsoft Word, Learn how to network with Windows.

Also possibly an introduction to project management and user administration in Linux.

This will be held at the ITT Tech Harrisburg Campus, most likely in room Theory 9.

No lecture, no lab, just a relaxed social event. Bring one item to share, soda, chips or a snack, pizza will be ordered shortly after 6:30. Possibly some games or other optional activities just for fun. This is a great way for newbies to get familiar with the group without the worries of being too technical. Bring your friends!

I will be asking the people who wish to connect to the core server to provide the following if you can:

1. first name

2. type of video card on your laptop/netbook
- as root or use sudo
- #lspci -v|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
- or perhaps you just know. Nvidia cards will be no issue, you can use the full UI, however ATI and Intel chipsets we may be stuck with UI1. Which is not a bad thing, just not as sweet.

3. the MAC address of your network card, the wired one.
-  #ifconfig|grep HWaddr
should return something like:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:c4:f1:c0:f5 <— this is the address

This month, Doug will be talking about backups and duplication using Duplicity.

Duplicity (http://duplicity.nongnu.org/) backs directories by producing encrypted tar-format volumes and uploading them to a remote or local file server. Because duplicity uses librsync, the incremental archives are space efficient and only record the parts of files that have changed since the last backup. Because duplicity uses GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign these archives, they will be safe from spying and/or modification by the server.

Ron will be bringing a laptop and some USB drives to demo what you can do with USB booting in Linux. We’ll see what kinds of utilities are file backup solutions work well from USB drives. Sounds cool.
