No lecture, no lab, just a relaxed social event. Bring one item to share, soda, chips or a snack, pizza will be ordered shortly after 6:30. Possibly some games or other optional activities just for fun. This is a great way for newbies to get familiar with the group without the worries of being too technical. Bring your friends!

This will be held at the ITT Tech Harrisburg Campus.

A fun time to watch, learn and try Linux on your own computer or someone else’s. Bring whatever devices you’d like to experiment with; your laptop or tower to install Linux on, or any peripherals as well. There will be several Monitor/Mouse/Keyboard sets available to use if you would like to just bring a tower and connect it there. Bring your Linux CDs or DVDs to share, if you don’t have a Linux disk, there will certainly be a few extra there to choose from. Some details are still in the works. If you have any suggestions, feel free to share.

This is also a great time to jump in if you’ve never attended this kind of event or if you are completely new to Linux!

This event will be held at ITT Tech in Harrisburg at 6:30pm.

Monthly Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month. This meeting will be on November 8th at 6:30pm at the ITT Tech Harrisburg Campus.

Seth Jerome, one of the original CPLUG members will be giving a talk and running a lab on LinuxMCE (http://linuxmce.com). Bring your laptop, and Seth continues:

And a network cable, preferably at least 12ft. Otherwise we’ll be sitting in each others laps.
Also,

I will send another message regarding this meeting to ask all who plan on attending to speak up, so as that I can create the diskless images in advance.
I will be asking the people who wish to connect to the core server to provide the following if you can:

1. first name

2. type of video card on your laptop/netbook
- as root or use sudo
- #lspci -v|grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82Q963/Q965 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
- or perhaps you just know. Nvidia cards will be no issue, you can use the full UI, however ATI and Intel chipsets we may be stuck with UI1. Which is not a bad thing, just not as sweet.

3. the MAC address of your network card, the wired one.
- #ifconfig|grep HWaddr
should return something like:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1c:c4:f1:c0:f5 <— this is the address

4. Please visit LinuxMCE on the web. Perhaps viewing the main page/forums/wiki you may have some questions for me.
Can’t wait to see you all again.
Best Regards,

Seth

If you don’t have an Ethernet cable, there may be a few extras available. If you have extras, please bring them. You can contact Seth through the mailing list at cplug@cplug.net.

Hi,

The next CPLUG meeting will be on Tuesday, 9/13/2011 at 6:30 PM at ITT in Harrisburg.

This month, Doug will be talking about backups and duplication using Duplicity.

Duplicity (http://duplicity.nongnu.org/) backs directories by producing encrypted tar-format volumes and uploading them to a remote or local file server. Because duplicity uses librsync, the incremental archives are space efficient and only record the parts of files that have changed since the last backup. Because duplicity uses GnuPG to encrypt and/or sign these archives, they will be safe from spying and/or modification by the server.

We’ll be in the same room as last time (Theory 9). Directions and details are on the website: http://cplug.net/wp/meetings/

See you then!

The next CPLUG meeting is Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at 6:30 PM at ITT in Harrisburg. This month, Nathan will be presenting a gentle introduction to Linux iptables. What’s iptables you ask?

Quoth Wikipedia: “iptables is a user space application program that allows a system administrator to configure the tables provided by the Linux kernel firewall (implemented as different Netfilter modules) and the chains and rules it stores. Different kernel modules and programs are currently used for different protocols; iptables applies to IPv4, ip6tables to IPv6, arptables to ARP, and ebtables for Ethernet frames.”

It’ll be a good talk for both users new to Linux and users who’ve been using it for a while.

Details on the Meetings page. See you then!
